The design process usually follows 3 steps:

Conceptual design
First a conceptual design is being developed, based on the building program and the results of the site evaluation. |

Design development
After the conceptual design is done, the design is developed to a final, hard-lined plan. In this stage the building configuration, layout and elevations are being worked out, together with the materials and technologies to be used. |

Construction drawings
When the design is fully developed, the construction drawings, also called blueprints, can be generated.
The construction drawings are needed to apply for permit, and to build the structure.
